Recording Suggestions

Some directors prefer to keep the recorder going during rehearsals to catch an actor’s spontaneous inspiration, since you never know when something special might happen. When recording young children, be prepared to say the lines before hand and have them repeat them.

Since dialogue is not always recorded in the sequence that it occurs in the script, have an associate check each line as it is spoken. This is a very important job and should be done conscientiously to avoid expensive return trips to the sound studio for lines that were missed.

Bar Sheets

The director plans scenes on printed forms, similar to music sheets, called bar sheets. These aid in establishing the action and music cues over broad segments of the production. The formal pattern of horizontal lines with vertical divisions at convenient intervals represent frames, feet, and seconds. Each long vertical line represents one foot of 35mm film. Screen time is measured in frames and seconds. Since there are twenty-four frames of film for each screen second, the director uses these increments of time to establish a tempo for each sequence. This is done with a stopwatch in one hand while gliding the index finger of the other hand across the individual story panels. The finger moves quickly for fast actions and languorously for slow actions, developing a rhythm that will convey the mood of the story.
